07-05-2017 (Wednesday) Kayla's Job in Jeopardy

Hope is busy at work; she asks Rafe if he had a nice lunch with Gabi.  He says yes, and tells her she helped him with something – trying to hold back a huge smile.  Hope doesn’t notice; she says that’s nice, and gets up from her desk still staring at a paper.  Rafe pulls a ring box out of his pocket and says, to himself, that it will be even nicer when she sees it.  Hope comes back over and tells Rafe what bothers her most about this case is that JJ isn’t even fighting it; it’s as if he has resigned himself to taking the rap, she says.  He tells her she needs to get her mind off things and takes her to a prepared picnic; she says it’s becoming their thing.  They sit down and Rafe begins to tell Hope how much she means to him; Julie comes along and asks if she’s interrupting.  They say no, and invite her to join them; she indulges in the chocolate covered strawberries.  Hope goes to get Julie a drink from the cooler; Rafe tells Julie that he is trying to propose and asks her to leave.  She tells him he can’t propose to Hope; she says he needs to ask Doug’s permission first.  She says he is just around the corner… he says he’ll go, and she offers to stall Hope.  He walks to the Square, and shows Doug the ring; Doug gladly gives his permission, and thanks him for all he has already done for his “little princess.”  He welcomes him to the family with a hug.  Then, however, he suggests he ask Victor, Beau’s father, for permission as well, saying it would just be a good idea; Rafe says okay.

Claire and Theo awkwardly fumble around each other in the kitchen while trying to get their separate breakfasts.  When Theo bumps into her, Claire asks him to just give her a minute; he asks if that’s what she really wants, or if she wants him to move out.  She tells him loving him is “kinda great,” adding that he is like a rock in her life, steady and easy; she tells him he is “real” and says that’s what she needs.  He tells her there are things he loves about her too, stating that she is beautiful; she asks since when he cares about artificial stuff, and he says he doesn’t but it’s just a fact.  He says what he loves most is that she treats him like a normal guy, not the autistic kid; she says he is totally normal, to which he disagrees, but adds that she accepts him that way like no one else has.  She asks him if they could “try again” but then Theo gets uncomfortable and stands up, saying he didn’t say that; she asks him why he said all those nice things then, and he replies, “because they are true.”  She gets angry all over again and storms out of the room.

Rafe tells Victor that he isn’t trying to take Beau’s place; just wants a place in Hope’s life.  He tells him that Beau actually asked him to take care of Hope and to look out for his family, just like he did; Victor says, if he had Beau’s blessing, he has his… but then he says, it isn’t him who can speak for Beau, he says that would be Roman.  He says, maybe it’s Roman Rafe needs the blessing from; Rafe says, “ah.”  Theo comes into Brady’s Pub looking for a job; Roman tells him if they were hiring right now, he would hire him.  Roman questions why he’s looking so hard for a job; Theo tells him he needs to move into his own place.  Roman tells him he’ll let him know if he hears of any openings; Theo thanks him and leaves.  Rafe shows up and tells Roman he wants to ask Hope to marry him; Roman tells him he is a good man and doesn’t need anybody’s blessing.  He tells him to follow his heart and keep loving her like he does; Rafe says that’s the easiest promise he’ll ever make.

Claire shows up and tells Hope that Theo just broke up with her; Hope says she’s sorry.  Claire mentions Theo’s “lie” of forever; Julie says that’s not really a lie because he said it with all of his heart.  Claire smiles and says, “that’s it!”  She declares that she is going to make Theo fall in love with her all over again, and leaves.  Hope gets tired of waiting and says she’s going back to the station; Julie stops her, telling her she was supposed to keep her there and keep her big mouth shut.  Hope almost gets her to spill the beans, but Rafe shows back up; Hope tells him they need to get back to the station.  He tells her to wait; he says there is something he needs to ask her.  She says, “okay, ask.”  He apologizes for making her wait, but says he wanted to make sure everything was right; he says it is now.  He pulls out the ring and says he knows he already asked, but he wanted to do it with a clear head; he asks.  Hope gasps and clasps her hands; we don’t see her answer this episode.  Claire goes home and helps Theo prepare his resume; she is sad when he says he is doing it so that he can get a job and move out, so he won’t have to be close to her all the time.  She tells him she doesn’t want him to move out.

The hospital director tells Kayla he would not have called her back unless it were serious; she asks if they should go somewhere private to talk.  He tells her no, saying, “because this involves you too young man” and looks straight at Tripp; Kayla looks confused.  She asks how this involves Tripp, and the director starts to describe her patient “Mr. Moralez” who died last week.  He points out that the incorrect medication was ordered for this patient; Kayla says that’s impossible, but he swears it came from her table.  (Still doesn’t explain how they believe Tripp is involved.)  Coming back, they tell us that Tripp is intended to be a witness, having shadowed Kayla all last week.  Steve tells the director, as an investigator, he can prove that his wife is not responsible for what has happened here; the director says they have their own investigation going on so his services aren’t needed.  Kayla stresses, while they perform an autopsy, wondering how this could have happened; she says, if she did this, the family of the patient could sue the hospital.  The results of the autopsy come back, showing the medication Kayla claimed to have prescribed in the patient’s system, not the more deadly version that was on the chart.  The director refuses to apologize to Kayla and tells her he will keeping a closer eye on her from now on.  Tripp tells Kayla he is glad everything is okay; she says, in spite of the fact that she almost made two horrible mistakes.  Steve hugs her and says nothing like that is going to happen again; Tripp smiles.
